Reflejo De Luna is the new debut CD by the artist Alacran, and it is a space-time sound journey, a bridge between Latin emotion and modern suggestions of electronic origin. It is a project that collects the legacy of traditional musical cultures such as tango and flamenco to invent new mixtures filtered by the taste for research and openness to the unpublished. The title track: “Reflejo De Luna” was included in the latest film by John Turturro: “Gigolo per caso” with Woody Allen and Sharon Stone [Fading Gigolo].
Spanish is the main language used by Alacran in their works, it was a natural choice for cultural affinity with our “cousins” of the Iberian peninsula but also because it involves a pool of different peoples, reaching as far as Central and South America. It is a language that weighs, as universal as English. The use of vocals goes a bit outside the conventional patterns of the song to channel itself into a more instrumental concept, where the voice has its role among the various roles of the instruments. The song “Reflejo de luna” which gives the title to the album, has a minimal but imaginative text that defines colors, as well as the use of acoustic instruments, the guitar, the bandoneon and the percussions. The sampled rhythmic base together with the use of analog synths represent the futuristic portion of the Alacran sound. In this fusion, Astor Piazzolla harmonies, Latin guitars and dub-electronic moods echo. Like a painter mixes different colors on the canvas, Alacran tries to put these elements together to outline his own idea of music.
The connection with the Spanish tradition happens in a very instinctive way, in the Mediterranean culture art, lifestyle habits, flavors influence each other to create a real expressive crossroads of contemporaneity. Even the effects on the voice play an important role, giving that modern touch that makes it stand out alongside more traditional instruments such as the guitar and the bandoneon. The album’s repertoire alternates songs with an instrumental texture with songs full of sensuality, romanticism and passion that make the atmospheres magical and dreamlike. The rhythm and movement inherent in the compositions involve the listener in the poetry and introspection of the dance, of the tango in its purest and most modern essence.
The faces and souls that give life to this musical adventure are those of the guitarist, composer and producer Stefano Micarelli and the vocalist, author and composer Paola Fortini. Both have been moving for years along multifaceted paths, moving from jazz to authorial music to incursions into ethnic music, collaborating with numerous artists and creating various projects in their name.
