This first album by Barrio Jazz Gang was born with the intention of tracing a new path that manages to blend the reflective components of jazz together with the physical, rhythmic and immediate elements of club-dance. The elaborated material is strengthened by the Mediterranean colors, a distinctive feature of the band, which contaminate the melodic and thematic segments of each track.
The musical language knows no barriers and borders, and in this work this is demonstrated by the sound elements coming from apparently distant cultures (Brazil, Cuba, Afro-America) that in some tracks are filtered in a kaleidoscope of new rhythms and sounds.
“While we were playing and composing, our thoughts were indicating new rhythmic and thematic solutions to insert into the classic structure of the dance track, to arrive at a sound outside the normal clichés. “Something first of all enjoyable to listen to and full of sensitivity” says Roby “Jazzman” Colella one of the two producers and composers of the project, with various experiences behind him and compiler of the two latest compilations Bazaar Nu-jazz and Bongo Sketches Express, released on the label he founded, as well as a couple released in Japan and the U.S.A. in these days. Among other things, the respective second volumes are in preparation.
The other main element of the group is the jazz musician Stefano Micarelli, jazz guitarist and artistic producer among other things of the solo album of the group’s vocalist Pauline London.
Additional members are two nationally renowned jazz musicians Aldo Bassi on the trumpet and Paolo Innarella on the sax and flute, who add spicy flavors to the compositions. The vocal parts are by Pauline London, also an Italian jazz musician, her first CD album is coming out these days.
Echoes of retro-jazz, bossa-nova and African rhythms form the backdrop to this excursion, beyond every barrier and border, opening up dizzying horizons. A collection of electronic pop and NuJazz that can be enjoyed even while sitting and talking with our best friends or while driving while panoramas of splendid sunny days open up before us.
Analyzing the songs, you will notice a persistent presence of the musicians’ “inner experience” that is equivalent to the importance of their external itineraries. You can discover within the jazz expression, the importance of “ghost notes” – notes not played clearly, almost simulating uncertainty.
The rhythmic division that reproduces the movements of being and the formation of sound inherited from tradition, amplified by the numerous rhythmic accents make this work a sort of research, outside the “constraints of genres. “We have our own style and we have a clear and pre-established path in front of us, since before we started this job, even if the road will be long it is already a pleasure to have taken it”.
The first 4 songs of the Spectrum CD have entered many prestigious compilations with brands such as, BMG, SONY, Stereo Deluxe, Unique, Wagram, WaterMusic, Ward, Zomba etc etc.
A song always by Spectrum “Bellavista” is the soundtrack in the latest American series of “Sex & the city.
The group has started working on the second CD, with prestigious guests including the living legend EDDIE HENDERSON on the trumpet, collaborator of musicians of the caliber of H. Hancock, M. Davis and E. Jones on many “BLUE NOTE” records.
