Brother Groove
PACKAGE OF MEMORIES

BROTHER GROOVE was born from the idea of using great historical Pop and Rock themes but also underground ones, both orchestral and non-orchestral, from the 60s and early 70s in the essential form of a jazz quartet.

This fourth release by REgroovable Jazz, [a sublabel of Funky Juice] continues to trace a path that began 5 years ago with the first CD by Dynamic 4 led by Stefano Micarelli and Daniele Tittarelli, which achieved considerable success especially in Japan with its release on the famous COLUMBIA JAZZ records.

The evolution of this path is also highlighted here in the choice of excellent musicians from the Roman jazz area and in the search for a new repertoire, which, while drawing on tradition, tends to overturn it and reinterpret it in an original and surprising way.

The master here is the soloist Carlo Micheli who proposes the themes each time using the sound of the sax, preferring both the tenor and the contralto depending on the theme treated, also passing through the baritone and the soprano being a multi-instrumentalist and also an excellent flutist.
His undisputed skills of touch, articulation and swing have made him one of the most sought-after session-men in the capital, capable of moving from ballads to very fast jazz songs.
The arrangements are created in the smallest details by pianist Silvano Melgiovanni who has managed to give a new and original face to the well-known themes such as: Modesty, Groovin’, Instant Karma, Soul Mission, In my life, More – Listen to believe in particular here: the versions of Instant Karma by John Lennon and More by Riz Ortolani both Revolutionized from a harmonic and rhythmic point of view and Reconstructed with a nu-vintage flavor so to speak, with a refined and classy lounge and chill-out drive.

All the material is supported (hence the name) by a drumming and double bass pattern from a solid rhythmic base formed respectively by Gigi Zito and Stefano Cesare.
Gigi Zito is a virtuoso of the independence of the hands that allows him to a soloist with regularity without and dynamics.

For him it is very important to be a musician before being a drummer and he recognizes this perspective in Kenny Clarke and Max Roach. A decisive perspective in building his grooves while maintaining the sense of timbric balance intact in every single bar.

In addition to the covers covered with a fresh and original sound, three new songs composed by Silvano Melgiovanni stand out, which are 2 splendid jazz-tracks in the form of a 60’s blue note blues style and a song sung by the energetic and warm voice of a guest: Stefano Rapanelli (discovered by Gigi Zito) who also sings another standard brought to success in the 50s by Frank Sinatra.
The pianist, Silvano, a refined and subtle melodist from the harmonic point of view, constructs phrases of admirable freshness and spontaneity that give each of his interventions a completeness from the aesthetic point of view and great clarity and melodic fluidity.

The interplay of the 4 musicians is fluid and incisive in all the songs thanks also to the fact that the sound was recorded live using techniques from that period to reconstruct a flavor now lost in modern recordings. The acoustic piano microphoned with 2 classic Neumanns renders all the warmth and timbre color, necessary for the climax required by the score with a purely vintage flavor.

Carlo Micheli graduated in 1992 from the Conservatory of Pesaro “G. Rossini”, but his passion for jazz and its study dates back to long before his classical studies.
In the summer of ’95 he participated in the clinics of the Berklee School, as part of the UMBRIA JAZZ review, where he was awarded several awards, including a prize given to the ten best musicians of the courses. On this occasion he was named Leader of the Berklee Band – Clinics Award Group, which then performed on 12/31/1995 in Orvieto, in the winter edition of Umbria Jazz, where he was widely praised both by the public and by the American artists present at the Festival.

He collaborates, in the role of arranger, saxophonist and keyboardist, in the recording and live performance field, with many artists (B. Biriaco, F. Micalizzi, and others). Among the numerous collaborations with Italian and non-Italian artists, there are Massimo Urbani, Paolo Fresu, Irio De Paula, Julio Alberto Segovia, Ice Cusumano, Joy Garrison From 2001 to 2003 he was a saxophonist in the pop tour of maestro Tullio De Piscopo and became part of the “Tullio De Piscopo Mediterranean Jazz Band”, with which he still collaborates, also taking care of the arrangements for the wind section.
In 2004, the collaboration with the composer and keyboard player of the Banco del Mutuo Soccorso Vittorio Nocenzi resulted in the multimedia show “Musicambiente” within the larger project for young people “Officine dell’Arte”
